Fashion History: An Overview

Early in fashion, there has always been a need to upkeep on the style and make sure that you have unique, fashionable attire. Throughout the world, in any time, past, present, or future there has always been a need to look and feel great in an outfit. If a fashion looked good then it would circulate around until everyone was up on that latest fashion.
In the sixteenth century, costume plates appeared where they were like fashion dolls in the sense that they showed the fashion before making an actual life sized version so it could be viewed and rated upon to decide if it was a viable fashion that might make it. It promotes and advertises a possible future fashion that may be available in stores and from your tailor. It is possible to find these fashion plates still around in local antique shops.
Fashion dolls were invented in the fourteenth century and were widely used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to show the latest fashion and hairstyles that were available or were in the process of becoming available. Sometimes flyers with the latest fashion and hairstyle trends on them were handed out for all to view.
These are not the best for documentation in museums because they do not accurately describe the attire and there are no pictures as well as being written in older languages and not converted into modern day English. They are used within museums but highly frowned upon. It would be a better record if the camera was invented before 1888.
